Greenhouse gas ‘failure’ faces court

Ireland’s failure to tackle climate change will be tested in the High Court today, in a case brought by environmentalists.
The Friends of the Irish Environment (FIE) action is the first time a group has sought to hold the government legally to account for its role in contributing to climate change.
Ireland could be fined up to €600 million a year for achieving only an expected 1 per cent reduction on its 2005 emission levels by 2020 instead of the planned 20 per cent in what the Environmental Protection Agency describes as a “best-case” scenario.
