Emissions level ‘higher than 1990’

It is “disturbing” that Ireland’s emissions are expected to be higher in 2030 than they were in 1990, a court has heard.
Closing arguments were made in the High Court yesterday in a landmark case against the government’s National Mitigation Plan (NMP) brought by Friends of the Irish Environment (FIE). The group wants a court to quash the plan and force the government to devise more ambitious proposals because it believes the NMP is inconsistent with national, EU and global obligations.
Lawyers for the group said there was no natural or economic reason for the government’s poor performance on reducing emissions.
